The Project
The $96 million upgrade of Stuart Drive, a key infrastructure project in Townsville, aims to enhance traffic flow and safety. The initiative, scheduled for completion by mid-2025, will transform Stuart Drive into a four-lane road between University Road and Bowen Road Bridge, incorporating the following improvements:
- Intersection Upgrades: Replacing the roundabout at Townsville Connection Road and Mervyn Crossman Drive/Fairfield Waters Drive with a signalised intersection.
- Signalised Side Streets: Upgrading Gartrell Drive and Kokoda Street intersections for improved safety and accessibility.
- Pedestrian and Cyclist Safety: Enhancing safety with wider paths, improved connections, and safer crossings.
Given the project’s scale and complexity, robust site management and security were crucial for smooth operations and public safety.
The Challenge
The extensive roadwork and multiple intersections upgrades required a comprehensive fencing solution to address several key challenges:
- Site Security: Protecting the construction area from unauthorised access and theft.
- Site Management: Clearly defining construction zones to ensure safety and minimise disruption.
- Public Access: Safeguarding pedestrian and cyclist pathways whilst maintaining clear access to work zones.
With multiple sites and tight deadlines, a local supplier with readily available stock was essential. Fortress Fencing’s regional warehouse network ensured swift delivery of fencing materials, directly addressing these challenges.
The Fortress Fencing Solution

We supplied 590 meters of 2000 Series Temporary Fence Panels, which are well-known for their durability and ease of installation. These panels established a strong and secure perimeter around the construction site, effectively protecting against unauthorised access and potential hazards.
To ensure maximum stability, we also provided Concrete Fence Feet. Our Heavy-Duty Couplers further reinforced the fence line, creating a robust barrier capable of withstanding the project’s demands.
