The Project
The Western Program Alliance is working on removing the level crossing at Old Geelong Road, Hoppers Crossing. In its place, a new road bridge will be built over the rail line east of the current crossing, streamlining traffic in the area as part of Victoria’s wider Level Crossing Removal project.
A construction zone has been set up work started in mid 2020, however this has been temporarily put on hold due to COVID-19. Whilst the area is not seeing active construction right now, it is important for the Western Program Alliance team to ensure that the site remains safe and secure.
Running alongside the busy Old Geelong Road, the construction zone has been delineated from the road by way of concrete road barriers from Fortress Fencing. These are likely to remain in place throughout the level crossing removal project works.
The Solution
Fortress Fencing supplied Deltabloc DB80 Concrete road barriers fitted with steel anti-gawking screens and SLED end treatments.
The Deltabloc DB80 concrete crash barriers are available in 2 metre, 4 metre or 6 metre lengths. It is an excellent passive traffic safety tool that is approved to minimise impacts from vehicles travelling up to 100km/hr in NSW & VIC, and 80km/hr in QLD.
In this application, the Western Program Alliance team have used SLED end terminals fitted to the concrete crash barriers. SLED stands for Sentry Longitudinal Energy Dissipater. It is constructed from yellow polyethylene with internal steel cables, and is designed to deform and rupture on impact.
These crash cushions are a narrow, water-filled non-redirective gating crash cushion that is a MASH Tested to TL-3 when used in a 4 module configuration.
Fortress Fencing can source a range of different end terminals and crash cushions that are approved for use with the Deltabloc barriers. Depending on your application and local guidelines, terminals such as the TAU-II, Quadguard and Absorb 350 may be suitable for your project.
