Crash Barriers with Screens and Shadecloth: A Turn-Key Solution for NWPA

The Project

As part of the extensive Level Crossing Removal Project in Victoria, the North West Program Alliance (NWPA) team are working on removing crossings in the Preston precinct.

The project area encompasses level crossings at Oakover Road, Bell Street, Cramer Street and Murray Road in Preston. Once the crossings are removed, a new rail line will be raised over the roads on the Mernda line, and the area underneath it will be turned into a community-friendly open space area with walking and cycling paths.

This project is due to be completed in 2022.

The Challenge

In order to prepare for the project, early preparations are underway in the area. A number of sites have been established, and car parks closed in the surrounding streets to allow space for plant and equipment.

The Preston station car park was closed to the public in November so that work crews could set up a site compound in the existing car park area.

Sitting opposite Preston Markets, the site required a tough crash rated barrier to create a safe perimeter, protecting the public and screening the site from view.

The Solution: Barriers fitted with screens and mesh from Fortress Fencing

Our barrier team arranged to have the popular Deltabloc highway barriers supplied directly to site with anti-gawking screens and shadecloth already fitted.

This saved the installation crew considerable time on site and provided a turn-key solution for the NWPA project team.

The Deltabloc barriers are crash rated to 100km/hr and guarantee reliable breakthrough protection for heavy vehicles and soft impact behaviour for small cars.

These concrete jersey barriers will provide a safety barricade, reducing the risk of plant & equipment coming into contact with pedestrians and cars in the nearby public areas.

Fitted with mesh fence panels and shade cloth, these barriers do double-duty as a privacy and debris screen, shielding the work activities from prying eyes.

For this project, Fortress Fencing supplied the barriers complete with anti-gawking screens and mesh, however, all components are available separately and can be fitted in situ, or retrofitted to existing road barriers.
